Office of General Counsel

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) provides legal advice to the Board of Trustees, the university president and administration, and various campus constituents. Additionally, the Office works closely with the State of Colorado Attorney General’s Office in its official representation of Mines in litigation and administrative matters and coordinates the engagement of external legal counsel.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of General Counsel is to provide comprehensive legal services to advance the educational mission of the Colorado School of Mines. It is the goal of this Office to proactively minimize the university’s legal risk and costs, reduce litigation exposure, and ensure legal compliance. At all times, university counsel will seek to protect and defend Mines’ legal interests in accordance with the laws of the United States and the State of Colorado, and be guided by the highest standards of professional ethics and integrity.

The attorneys in this Office practice higher education law and advise campus constituents on all relevant law and policy that impacts a major research university. Counsel provide support in a wide variety of substantive areas, including state and federal regulation; compliance; governance; employment issues; immigration law; intellectual property; contracts and business transactions; real property; student affairs; and athletics.
