Office of General Counsel

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) provides legal advice to the Board of Trustees, the university president and administration, and various campus constituents. Additionally, the Office works closely with the State of Colorado Attorney General’s Office in its official representation of Mines in litigation and administrative matters and coordinates the engagement of external legal counsel.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of General Counsel is to provide comprehensive legal services to advance the educational mission of the Colorado School of Mines. It is the goal of this Office to proactively minimize the university’s legal risk and costs, reduce litigation exposure, and ensure legal compliance. At all times, university counsel will seek to protect and defend Mines’ legal interests in accordance with the laws of the United States and the State of Colorado, and be guided by the highest standards of professional ethics and integrity.

The attorneys in this Office practice higher education law and advise campus constituents on all relevant law and policy that impacts a major research university. Counsel provide support in a wide variety of substantive areas, including state and federal regulation; compliance; governance; employment issues; immigration law; intellectual property; contracts and business transactions; real property; student affairs; and athletics.

Notice of Availability of Alternative Service of Process

The Office of General Counsel at Colorado School of Mines, 1500 Illinois Street, Golden, Colorado, is not open to the public at this time due to COVID-19. Because our building is closed and staff are working remotely, there is no one available to accept service of process of legal documents.

If you need to serve legal documents on this office, you may send a request for a waiver of personal service to aswalker@mines.edu. Your email should include all of the documents you need to serve, as well as a waiver form for acceptance of service. This email account is regularly monitored, and we will respond to your request in due course.

Alternatively, you may serve your legal documents on the Office of General Counsel by delivering them personally to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office at the Colorado Department of Law’s Office at the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center, 1300 Broadway, Denver, Colorado, 80203. The Office of General Counsel has authorized the Attorney General to accept service on behalf of the Office of General Counsel.

To enter the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center, you will be required to comply with all security and social distancing directions of the Colorado State Patrol, which maintains a regular watch at the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center. The hours of public access to the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No service will be accepted outside of these hours.
